Summer Enrichment Program

The Southern Youth Leadership Development Institute's Summer Enrichment Program is an eight-week program serving Montgomery youth. Created and led by civil rights activists and educators, the program combines educational enrichment, leadership development, and civic engagement with opportunities for students to learn directly from the people, institutions, and history that have shaped their community.

The Summer Enrichment Program is open to Montgomery-area students ages 12–18 who maintain at least a 2.5 GPA. Students are selected for SYLDI's summer program through recommendations from teachers, school board members, elected officials, and other community leaders.

Throughout the summer, students meet with elected officials, faith leaders, educators, healthcare providers, business professionals, and others from across the community. They visit local government institutions and historic sites, explore Historically Black Colleges and Universities, learn directly from civil rights foot soldiers, and deepen their understanding of Black history and the Civil Rights Movement.

The program places a strong emphasis on character, confidence, and communication. Students are challenged to express themselves clearly and confidently while developing their public speaking and debate skills. Through student elections and other hands-on activities, they also gain practical experience with campaigning, organizing, and civic participation.

The program culminates with a multi-day civic and cultural enrichment trip to Atlanta, where students build on what they have learned and experienced in Montgomery through visits to historical, cultural, educational, corporate, and governmental institutions.
